When you are hiring remodelers always make sure you conduct the interviews, back ground checks, ideally contractors with positive customer reviews and with more than three years of experience in the construction industry. A good contractor will also have the necessary accreditations local or international with the associations for construction. Before you finalize with a remodeler, it is important that you visit their job site and observe how they operate. You will be observing if they are organized, if they take the necessary safety measures and number of workmen in the site.
Asbestos is a very dangerous substance to handle. It is made up of tiny glass-like shards. When inhaled these shards slice up the inside of your lungs. They are impossible to remove. Unfortunately, asbestos was often used in older homes. This was before its health hazards were known. Before 1970, asbestos was commonly used in the insulation of pipes, and also as in the production of ceiling and floor tiles. Avoid asbestos at all costs and always have a professional remove it from your home.
Inquire about how changes are handled. Even when a scope of work and price are agreed to in advance, at times "inspiration of the moment" occurs as work is being done, and you may wish to make some changes in midstream. Ask upfront what the mechanism for change is, and what costs may be involved. Minor changes should never upset anyone, medium to major changes should require a quick renegotiation of terms. If contractors are unwilling to make changes - and charge a fair price for them - they may not be your best choice.
The author has found 12' widths are most useful. This covers nearly any ceiling height, and accommodates traditional floor plans for most rooms so there's less splicing.
